Online TV journalist arrested, accused of being Maoist courier

Reporters Without Borders calls on the central government to shed light on the reasons for the arrest of Pittala Srisailam, editor of the online television station Musi TV (www.musitv.com), on 4 December in the eastern state of Andhra Pradesh. Accused of being a Maoist “courier,” Srisailam was going to interview one of the leaders of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) when arrested.

Srisailam was interrogated for 30 hours before being formally placed under arrest. In the course of his transfer from Ongol prison to Nellore prison in Andhra Pradesh, he told journalists: “I was kidnapped by police and wrongly implicated as a Maoist courier. I was also tortured by the police in custody to make me confess to things I am not aware of. I have no connections whatsoever with the Maoists and was there only for an interview as a part of my job as a journalist.”

His family and colleagues have met with Andhra Pradesh interior minister Jana Reddy, but nothing has so far come of the meeting. Musi TV supports separate statehood for Telangana, the northwestern half of Andhra Pradesh state. It posts videos of pro-Telangana meetings, unrest and local news on its website. The Hyderabad police recently threatened Srisailam with the “worst consequences” if he continued to work for the station.

నెల్లూరు క్రైమ్, డిసెంబరు 14 ( ఆన్‌లైన్) : ప్రజాస్వామ్య దేశంలో కలాలకు సంకెళ్ళు వేసి నిజాలను దాచాలని ప్రయత్నిస్తే ప్రభుత్వాలకు పునాదులు ఉండవని మూసి టివి ఎడిటర్ పిట్టల శ్రీశైలం తెలిపారు. మావోయిస్టుల కొరియర్‌గా ముద్రవేసి ఇటీవల పోలీసులు ఆయన్ను అరెస్టు చేశారు. వారం రోజుల నుంచి నెల్లూరు సెంట్రల్ జైలులో రిమాండ్‌లో ఉన్న శ్రీశైలం శుక్రవారం బెయిల్‌పై విడుదల అయ్యారు. ఈ సందర్భంగా ఆయన విలేకరులతో మాట్లాడుతూ గత 20సంవత్సరాలకుపైగా తాను జర్నలిస్టుగా, తెలంగాణ జర్నలిస్టు ల ఫోరం కన్వీనర్‌గా పనిచేస్తున్నట్లు తెలిపారు. తెలంగాణలో పలు న్యాయమైన సమస్యలపై పోరాటాలు చేశామన్నారు. గతంలో మావోయిస్టు అగ్రనేత సుదర్శన్ మరికొంతమంది నాయకులతో ప్రత్యేక ఇంటర్వ్యూలు చేసినట్లు చెప్పారు.

ఇటీవల టిఆర్ఎస్ నేత కేసిఆర్ నిజాంపై మాట్లాడిన పలు అంశాలపై తెలంగాణాకు సంబంధించి కొంతమంది పార్టీ నేతలతో, మావోయిస్టు అగ్రనేతలతో ఇంటర్వ్యూలు నిర్వహించాలనే ఉద్దేశంతో గత కొద్దిరోజులుగా వారిని కలిసే ప్రయత్నాలు చేశామన్నారు. ఇటీవల అటువైపు నుంచి ఇంటర్వ్యూకు గ్రీన్‌సిగ్నల్ రావడంతో హైదరాబాద్ నుంచి ఈనెల నాలుగవ తేదీన కందుకూరుకు బయలుదేరి వెళ్ళామన్నారు. మావోయిస్టు నేతల దగ్గరకు తీసుకెళ్ళే కొరియర్ కందుకూరు ఆర్టీసి బస్టాండ్‌లో ఉంటాడని , అతని వద్దకు వెళ్ళి రాజు మీరేనా అని అడిగితే ఆ వ్యక్తి చేరాల్సిన గమ్యానికి తీసుకెళతాడని చెప్పి ఉండడంతో తాను నేరుగా కందుకూరు బస్టాండ్‌కు వెళ్ళినట్లు శ్రీశైలం తెలిపారు. బస్‌స్టాండ్‌లో తనే రాజునని తలూపిన వ్యక్తితో కొంత దూరం వెళ్ళాక ఒక్కసారిగా 10మంది మఫ్టీలో ఉన్న పోలీసులు తుపాకులు చూపిస్తూ చుట్టుముట్టి బలవంతంగా టాటా సుమోలో ఎక్కించుకుని వెళ్ళారన్నారు.

కళ్ళకు గంతలు కట్టి సుమారు 10గంటల పాటు వివిధ ప్రాంతాల్లో తిప్పారన్నారు. అదేరోజు రాత్రి హైదరాబాద్‌కు తీసుకెళ్ళి తనకు సాగర్ సాంబశివుడితో సంబంధాలు ఉన్నాయని అభియోగం మోపి నిర్బంధించారన్నారు. మావోయిస్టులకు కొరియర్‌గా పనిచేస్తున్నట్లు ఒప్పుకోమని పోలీసులు చిత్రహింసలు పెట్టారని చెప్పారు. తన వద్ద సుమారు వంద తెల్లకాగితాలమీద సంతకాలు పెట్టించుకున్నారని శ్రీశైలం తెలిపారు. తాను జర్నలిస్టునని , మావోయిస్టులతో ఎలాంటి సంబంధాలు లేవని, కేవలం ఇంటర్వ్యూ కోసం వెళుతున్నట్లు చెప్పినా వారు వినిపించుకోలేదని ఆవేదన వ్యక్తపరిచారు. రాష్ట్రంలో కాంగ్రెస్ ప్రభుత్వం అధికారంలోనికి వచ్చాక జర్నలిస్టులపై దాడులు, అక్రమ కేసులు ఎక్కువయ్యాయన్నారు. ప్రజాసంఘాలు, మేథావులు, రాజకీయ పార్టీలు వీటిని ఖండించాలని కోరారు.

కందుకూరు, డిసెంబరు 13 (AndhraJyothy ఆన్‌లైన్‌): మావోయిస్టు కొరియర్‌ అనే ఆరోపణలతో ఈనెల ఐదున అరెస్టయిన జర్నలిస్టు పిట్టల శ్రీశైలంకు గురువారం బెయిల్‌ మంజూరైంది. శ్రీశైలంకు బెయిల్‌ మంజూరు చేయాల్సిందిగా ఆయన సోదరి కోమబోతు మంగ, సోదరుడు పిట్టల వెంకటేష్‌లు బుధవారం పిటీషన్‌ దాఖలు చేయగా నిర్ణయాన్ని గురువారానికి వాయిదా వేసిన కందుకూరు అడిషనల్‌ మున్సిఫ్‌ మేజిస్ట్రేట్‌ ఎస్‌.చినబాబు బెయిల్‌ మంజూరు చేశారు. అలాగే శ్రీశైలంను విచారణ నిమిత్తం పోలీసు కస్టడీకి అనుమతించాలని కోరుతూ దాఖలైన పిటీషన్‌ ను ఆయన తోసిపుచ్చారు.

అయితే ఈనెల 15వ తేది పోలీసు విచారణాధికారి ఎదుట ఉదయం పది గంటల నుంచి మధ్యాహ్నం ఒంటి గంట వరకు హాజరై విచారణకు సహకరించాలని కోరారు. అది కూడా పోలీసులు శ్రీశైలంను నాయయవాదుల సమక్షంలో మాత్రమే విచారించాలని మేజిస్ట్రేట్‌ స్పష్టం చేశారు. శ్రీశైలం సోదరి కోమబోతు మంగ పది వేల రూపాయలకు, సోదరుడు పిట్టల వెంకటేష్‌ ఐదు వేలకు పూచీకత్తు ఇచ్చిన మీదట నెల్లూరు జైలులో ఉన్న శ్రీశైలంను విడుదల చేయాలని ఆయన ఆదేశించారు. శ్రీశైలంకు బెయిల్‌ మంజూరు కోరుతూ దాఖలైన పిటీషన్‌పై నిర్ణయం వెలువడుతున్న సందర్భంగా సిఐ విద్యాసాగర్‌ ఆధ్వర్యంలో సబ్‌ కోర్టు ఆవరణలో బందోబస్తు ఏర్పాటు చేశారు.

మావోయిస్టు అగ్రనేత సాంబశివుడికి కొరియర్‌గా ఉంటూ కందుకూరులో ఒక అజ్ఞాత వ్యక్తి నుంచి 10 లక్షలు తీసుకెళ్లి నల్గొండ జిల్లాలోని మల్లారెడ్డికి అందించేందుకు శ్రీశైలం కందుకూరు రాగా తాము అరెస్ట్‌ చేశామని పోలీసులు ఆయనపై అభియోగం మోపగా తనకు, మావోయిస్టులతో తనకు ఎలాంటి సంబంధాలు లేవని, కేవలం ఒక జర్నలిస్టుగా మావోయిస్టు నాయకులను ఇంటర్వ్యూ చేయటానికి మాత్రమే తాను కందుకూరు వచ్చానని శ్రీశైలం వాదిస్తున్న విషయం తెలిసిందే.

Our journalist friend Pittala Srisailam, the force behind Musi TV, was arrested and implicated in a false case by Andhra Pradesh police. He was whisked away in Kandukur in Prakasam district some time in the afternoon of December 4, 2007 when he went to interview a leader of the CPI (Maoist). His whereabouts were not known for the next 30 hours, despite his family and friends, including journalist unions’ office bearers making representations to the police bosses and Home Minister. Finally in the night of December 5, the Home Minister accepted that Srisailam was in their custody. He also said they would let him off if it is true that he went for an interview only. However, by the late night Srisailam was implicated in a false case and shown as a “courier” of the Maoists.

While changing from Ongole subjail to Nellore jail, Srisailam had an occasion to speak to press and said “I was kidnapped by police and wrongly implicated as a ‘courier’ to Maoists. I was also tortured by the police in custody to confess some statements which I am not aware of. I have no connections whatsoever with the Maoists and was there only for an interview as a part of my job as a journalist“. These statements were prominently displayed by all TV news channels.

As we all know, many journalists interviewed Maoist leaders innumerable times in the past but no one has ever been arrested or harassed for doing their job. Pittala Srisailam who has already been arrested and harassed last week by Amberpet police for screening pro-Telangana films as street shows is now being targeted by the state police for performing his job as a journalist. When he was arrested in Amberpet last week, supposedly the police mentioned that they were under a lot of pressure from higher officials to curb his activities for Telangana cause. It is obvious that he is specifically being targeted for his dedicated work for Telangana media.

It is observed that some of the mainstream media are addressing him as ‘ex-journalist’. We should all note that Srisailam resigned from MaaTV recently to work full-fledged for MusiTV. Reportedly, MaaTV was not happy with Srisailam’s activities for Telangana. Now that he is working full time for a Telangana TV (Musi TV), he is not even being considered as a journalist anymore. Does working for Andhra media only make someone a journalist and not working independently for Telangana?

Srisailam’s family is trying to arrange a bail for Srisailam. We all are aware that Srisailam, in spite of his meager income has invested over Rs. 5 lakhs for MusiTV by selling his land. It is our moral responsibility as Telangana supporters to stand by him & his family, who has done so much to bring Telangana to our screens.
